Correcting Nitrate Profiles Measured by the In Situ Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer in Arctic Ocean Waters
نویسندگان
چکیده
A recently commercialized sensor, the In Situ Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer (ISUS), can determine seawater nitrate concentrations rapidly. Procedures for incorporating ISUS data within routine conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) profiling studies have not been described. Using a CTD system with an ISUS, vertical hydrographic profiles with nutrient concentrations were determined at 42 sites across the shelf break on the Beaufort Sea, Alaska. Key data processing steps included elimination of redundant nitrate values, shifting the ISUS data so as to be simultaneous with the CTD data, and correcting the ISUS output voltages for warm-up drift. After regressing the corrected ISUS output voltages against nitrate concentrations determined on bottle samples, the ISUS-estimated nitrate concentrations reproduced the bottle results within +/0.28 μM. The highly detailed ISUS profiles showed mesoscale intrusions of low nutrient water on the upper continental slope and strong nutrient upwelling near the shelf break.

Variations in Nitrate and Phosphate Contents of Waters in the Southwest Caspian Sea
Science and technological developments provide new opportunities to exploit aquatic resource. Hence, it is important to understand biotic and abiotic conditions of aquatic ecosystems. Objective of this Paper is to report findings of the study of nitrate and phosphate contents of water and effects of other physicalchemical parameters in the southwest regions of the Caspian Sea in the spring and ...
متن کاملImpacts of Ocean Acidification on Sediment Processes in Shallow Waters of the Arctic Ocean
Despite the important roles of shallow-water sediments in global biogeochemical cycling, the effects of ocean acidification on sedimentary processes have received relatively little attention. As high-latitude cold waters can absorb more CO2 and usually have a lower buffering capacity than warmer waters, acidification rates in these areas are faster than those in sub-tropical regions. The presen...
متن کاملSeasonal and spatial distribution of particulate organic matter (POM) in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas
As part of the Western Arctic Shelf–Basin Interactions (SBI) project, the production and fate of organic carbon and nitrogen from the Chukchi and Beaufort Sea shelves were investigated during spring (5 May–15 June) and summer (15 July–25 August) cruises in 2002. Seasonal observations of suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) and large-particle (453mm) size class suggest t...
متن کاملSurvey of Nitrate Removal Method from Aqueous Solutions Using Titanium Dioxide Nano-Photocatalyst
Background & objectives: Because of its very high solubility, nitrate penetrates easily into soil and underground waters. Surface waters such as lakes, reservoirs, and rivers are exposed to nitrate pollution. Photocatalytic processes have a high potential for nitrate removal due to complete oxidation, lack of formation of multi-cycle metabolites and the availability of catalysts. The purpose of...
متن کاملThe conservative behavior of dissolved organic carbon in surface waters of the southern Chukchi Sea, Arctic Ocean, during early summer
The spatial distribution of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and the optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) determined by ultraviolet-visible absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy were measured in surface waters of the southern Chukchi Sea, western Arctic Ocean, during the early summer of 2013. Neither the DOC concentration nor the optical parameters of the DOM cor...
